My Sunday Photo 24: Focused Flying Caspian Gull

I took this picture way back in May, just outside the door of my prefabricated classroom overlooking my school’s field. Lunch was over, the birds were out in full force, students were back in lessons, and I had a few minutes to spare.

I’d been trying to improve my skill to take better pictures of things in motion. My classroom, in its remote location was a good practice point, whenever I could. It was right on the side of the feeding feast the birds returned to every school week day, after break and lunch. Students who use the field are always so generous with their litter, you see. And the birds always show their gratitude for their rich pickings in their loud calls, brief arguments, flying displays, and leisurely rest.

On this day, I didn’t have a lesson to teach during the last hour of the school day, the weather was somewhat warm, and I needed the therapy of photography. Like I have done many times before and since, I took pictures from different angles, zooming in and out as quickly as I could, and hoped for the best.

Shooting birds is fab practice for capturing movement … BIRDS ARE ALWAYS ON THE MOVE … even when they’re resting, you know it’s only a matter of time before some feet pushes backwards with wings raised, and body propelled forward.

As usual there were a variety of birds; and they mostly get along. There were the Pigeons, the Brown Headed Gulls, the Caspian Gulls, the Crows, and other smaller varieties, whose names I do not yet know.

When I looked through my shots, there was nothing spectacular. However, I was really pleased with this shot of a Caspian Gull in flight, with its opened beak holding an object. I’ve cropped it to make it bigger though it’s not crystal clear.

I’m impressed with its focus. I assume it has to concentrate on what it’s doing and where it’s going, and perhaps even more with a beak full.

It’s a little reminder for me of the need to be single minded in my attempts to accomplish some feats.

What little character building reminder have you had recently, perhaps inspired by a picture you took?

    • Thanks so much. It was a lovely place to teach. I’ve now been moved to another classroom with a different view; I hope I get some spectacular pictures from there in time. Thanks for your lovely comment.

    • I didn’t notice them, I need to go back and check. Mine was from the door of my classroom, on my school’s field. A patch of the Thames isn’t far behind though. 🙂 I’ll be over at AnimalTales soon … I just need to make sure that I in a place to commit to the lovely reads. 🙂
